Set up your AI agent

Create an AI agent, find your way around the builder, put it on your phone line, test it, and publish your changes.

Your AI agent answers calls, does the work it has Tools for, and hands the caller to your team when it should. You build it in AI Studio > Agents, then put it on your phone line with a Call Flow.

A phone number, to put the agent on your line

Inbound or outbound

Select Create Agent and choose:

  • Inbound agent: answers calls to your numbers. Quick express setup, then the full builder. This page covers it.
  • Outbound agent: makes the calls in an outbound campaign, on Scale. See Build an outbound agent.

An agent stays the kind you create. An inbound agent can’t make campaign calls, and an outbound agent can’t answer your line.

Create an inbound agent

Choose an engine

Classic transcribes, thinks, then speaks, with exact wording and fine control over turn-taking. Live listens and speaks at the same time and sounds more natural, but says things in its own words. Classic is selected to start.

You can’t change the engine after the agent is created. See Classic and Live.

Tell me about your agent

Describe your business and what callers usually want, in a short paragraph of plain English, under 2,000 characters. For example:

We’re North Valley Heating & Air in Tucson. Callers want a repair or a tune-up, ask if we cover their area, or check when a technician is arriving. Urgent no-heat calls should go to the on-call tech.

Select Continue, and Crulon drafts the agent’s name, a greeting, its persona and a suggested voice from what you wrote. It also suggests Tools to add later; nothing is attached for you.

Or pick a starting point from the templates, without a description, to start from that template’s persona. Start blank skips the rest and creates an untitled agent.

Pick a voice

Choose a language, then a voice, and select the play button to hear it. You can change the voice, speed and background sound later.

Confirm the basics

Check the Agent name and Business name, both required, and the Greeting. Select Create agent, then Open agent builder.

Find your way around the builder

The builder lists its sections on the left. The Test panel is on the right, under a summary of the agent’s language, voice, Tools and knowledge. Across the top: Total calls, the Live version, how much Knowledge is attached, and when it was created.

    Versions

    Every published version, and rollback

The sections of an inbound agent, in the builder’s order.

Every agent setting explains each field.

Drafts

Every change saves to a draft as you type: the top bar shows Saving…, and the agent shows Draft until you publish. Callers don’t hear a draft.

  • Discard draft throws away your unpublished changes and goes back to the published agent.
  • Knowledge is the exception: attaching or removing a document applies to calls straight away.
  • If someone else changes the agent at the same time, Crulon asks you to Reload before you can save again.

Put it on your phone line

An inbound agent doesn’t have a phone number of its own. Callers reach it through a Call Flow:

  1. In Call Flows, add an AI Agent step and choose your agent.
  2. Set where calls go if the AI can’t answer, such as your team or voicemail.
  3. Assign the flow to a number and publish it.

A new agent answers with the settings you created it with. After that, changes reach callers when you publish them. See Build a Call Flow.

Test before you publish

Select Talk in browser in the Test panel to talk to your draft. It runs the same checks as publishing first.

Talk in browser

Recent test calls show here, with their transcripts.

The Test panel, set to call as one of your contacts, with Tools answering with sample data.
  • Call as sets who the agent thinks is calling: No caller ID, A contact (the agent looks them up as on a real call) or A number. It’s remembered for you, not saved to the agent.
  • Use sample data for tools makes Tools answer with made-up data instead of running. The agent still checks with you where it would on a real call.
  • Recent test calls keeps your last ten, with their transcripts.

Warning

With sample data off, Tools do real work in a test call. Testing as a contact acts on their real account.

A test call can’t hand off or hang up for you: to check a handoff, publish and call your number from a phone. A browser test also sounds a little cleaner than a phone line, so make one real call before you rely on it.

Publish and roll back

Select Publish and add a note about what changed, such as “Added after-hours rule”. The note becomes the version’s name. The dialog shows how many phone numbers use the agent, and callers get the new version straight away.

Versions lists every publish, with who published it and when, and marks the Live one.

  • Compare two versions to see every field that changed.
  • Roll back makes an older version live again, as a new version, and discards your draft. The history stays as it was.
  • Tools deleted since that version are left out, and Crulon tells you which.
  • Knowledge isn’t part of a version: rolling back doesn’t change what’s attached.

Duplicate or delete

On the agent list, open an agent’s menu:

  • Duplicate makes a copy and opens it. It counts toward your plan’s AI agents.
  • Delete removes the agent. This can’t be undone. Take it out of your Call Flows first.
