Get and manage phone numbers
Buy a local or toll-free number, choose who answers and calls from it, get it ready for texting, and release it when you no longer need it.
Every seat comes with a phone number, and you can add more. Numbers live in Settings > Phone numbers.
- Where
- Settings > Phone numbers
- Plans
- One number per seat on every plan. Extra numbers are $5 a month
- Who can do it
- Workspace Admins and Managers buy numbers, and Workspace Admins release them, to start
What you can get
| Your workspace’s country | Numbers from Crulon | Texting |
|---|---|---|
| United States | Local numbers in any area code, and toll-free numbers | Yes, once registered |
| Canada | Local numbers in any area code, and toll-free numbers | Yes; toll-free once verified |
| Australia, New Zealand | No. On Scale, bring your own carrier | No |
You buy numbers from your workspace’s own country. Toll-free numbers start with 800, 833, 844, 855, 866, 877 or 888.
Numbers from Crulon call the US and Canada, and reach 911. Calls to other countries are coming soon; on Scale, numbers you bring through your own carrier can call them today. Premium-rate numbers are always blocked.
Moving an existing number to Crulon from another provider (porting) is coming soon. On Scale, you can keep using it for calls by bringing your own carrier.
Buy a number
Start
Open Settings > Phone numbers and select Add a new number. On Scale, choose Crulon-provided number.
Search
Search By city, By area code or Toll-free. For toll-free, type the letters or digits you want, such as CARS or 4357. Pick a number from the results, then select Continue.
Label it and buy
Give the line a label your team will recognise, such as “Support line”, and select Buy this number.
The number works for calls straight away. Next, put a Call Flow on it, or turn on Default ring to ring your team without one. Until you do either, calls to it end with a short apology.
When you’ve used the numbers your seats include, the last step shows the extra cost: $5 a month for each additional number, with the rest of the current billing period charged today. The search page shows how many of your numbers are in use.
Who uses a number
Each number has Members: the people who can ring when it’s called, call out from it, and see its calls and messages. Open the number and select the Members tab, then Add member.
| Role | What they can do |
|---|---|
| Owner | Everything, including adding and removing anyone |
| Admin | Add and remove Members |
| Member | Use the number, and turn their own ringing on or off |
Whoever buys a number becomes an Owner, along with the workspace owners. A number always keeps at least one Owner.
Turn off Ring on inbound for someone to keep them on the number without ringing them. They can still call and text from it, and they still get its voicemail notifications.
Members matter elsewhere too: a Call Flow’s Ring Agents step can ring Members of this number, and voicemails left on the number notify its members.
Call out from a number
When you make a call, choose the number under Calling from. It lists the numbers you’re a member of.
To skip that choice, set a Default outbound number in Settings > Profile > Calling. Set a Default SMS sender there too for texts.
Texting
Numbers from Crulon in the US and Canada can send and receive texts. Numbers you bring through your own carrier are voice only.
Texts to your number arrive straight away, in Conversations. Before most numbers can send texts, they need registering with the carriers, in Settings > Trust Center:
- US local numbers need A2P 10DLC registration, once for your business.
- Toll-free numbers, in the US and Canada, need verifying one number at a time.
- Canadian local numbers can text right away. Texts from them to US numbers are sent, but US carriers may reject them.
Until registration is approved, the number’s badge reads SMS pending compliance. When it’s approved, sending turns on by itself and the badge reads SMS ready. Register your numbers for texting covers each step.
Default ring
Default ring rings a number’s members when no Call Flow handles the call: the simplest way to answer a number without building a flow. Each member rings in Crulon, and on their desk phones if they have any. Open the number, turn on Default ring, and choose:
| Setting | Options |
|---|---|
| Strategy | All at once (the default), Longest idle, Round robin, Sequential, Single member |
| Who rings | Everyone, Admins and owners, or Owners only |
| Ring timeout | 5 to 120 seconds, 30 by default |
A published Call Flow always takes priority. If nobody answers, the call ends; for voicemail or the AI agent, use a Call Flow.
Other settings
- Label: rename the number with Edit. The label shows across calls, messages and reports.
- Delivery analytics: texts sent, delivered, failed and received over the last 30 days.
- History tab: who changed the number’s members, roles, label or default caller ID, and when.
Release or disable a number
Both are in the number’s Danger zone, for Workspace Admins.
- Release number gives the number up for good. It frees its place in your number allowance at your next renewal, and your workspace can’t buy the same number again. A number can’t be released while a Call Flow uses it: archive the flow first.
- Disable number stops calls and texts but keeps the number on your account, where it still counts toward your numbers and your bill. Turning it back on isn’t in the app yet, so email support@crulon.ai if you need to.
Bring your own carrier
On Scale, you can connect the phone line you already pay for, a SIP trunk or your own phone system, and use its numbers in Crulon for calls. It’s also how workspaces in Australia and New Zealand get numbers. Numbers you bring are voice only, and emergency calling on them is handled by your carrier.
Bring your own carrier covers connecting a carrier, attaching numbers and the calling rules.
